BC Communities with Lowest Wildfire Risk
BC communities rated Low wildfire risk by BC Wildfire Service data, sorted by NorthScore composite livability score. Low wildfire risk combined with high livability is a rare combination in BC.
Important context: every community on this list carries a Severe seismic risk rating. The urban and suburban communities that are safe from wildfire — Metro Vancouver, Victoria, and their surrounding municipalities — sit directly above the Cascadia Subduction Zone. In BC, there is currently no community with both low wildfire and low seismic risk. This ranking is most useful for someone prioritizing wildfire safety specifically, with the understanding that the tradeoff is significant seismic exposure in the same communities. BC's Interior communities face high wildfire risk but moderate (not severe) seismic risk. Coastal communities have the inverse. This reflects BC's geology: the Cascadia fault runs offshore from Vancouver to northern BC, while wildfire risk follows Interior forest cover and dry conditions.
